    Abstract
    Students need help and support during their study in higher education. Counseling services in higher education institutions have important role in helping and supporting them. Wide dissemination of the roles and functions of counseling service, the needs and difficulties of counselors in playing the roles and function is important so that counseling services receive support from the of community in higher education institutions. This paper aims to present and discuss the roles and function of counseling services in higher education setting. The paper also explores basic administrative need of an affective counseling service and some professional issues related. Besides, the paper presents the real condition of counseling in some higher education institutions to serve as a challenge both for counselor and the rest of community to enhance the role of counseling services.
