    Abstract
Space and community shape the urban formation which represents community structure. One village area called Kampong Made was selected as a case study due to its situation of mixed dwellers anticipating the fast emergence of sprawled new urban settlement in the west part of Surabaya. This study reveals how the community of Kampong Made uses sustainable means of communication to control as well as share information, verbal and non-verbal, as indigenous people of Indonesia through their physical environment. Further result shows that various social gatherings are the manifestation of maintaining communication performed in spaces, from public to private spaces; from streets to front yards and terraces; from mosques to resident’s hall. This study concludes that sustainable community in Kampong Made is defined by social gathering and within the range of visual and auditory distances.
